The big decision

What is the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare and lets you see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, with predictable out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare through a private insurer’s network — often with lower premiums and bundled dental and vision, but with copays, prior authorizations, and network restrictions that most people don’t discover until they need care.

  • This choice affects your freedom to see doctors — and how hard it is to change your mind later
  • Switching from Advantage back to a Supplement after a diagnosis can be declined in most states
  • Most agents only show you one type of plan — because that’s all they’re contracted to sell
  • Cindy shows you both, explains the tradeoffs, and tells you what she would choose in your situation

“Cindy was extremely helpful in helping me navigate the confusing business of Medicare and all the choices. She spent an enormous amount of time educating me on the different options that fit my particular needs. I would recommend her highly.”

The three Medicare mistakes I hear every week

Each one is preventable. Each one is very hard to undo once the enrollment window closes.

Mistake 01

“I chose a $0 plan and didn’t realize I’d need approval before every test and procedure.”

Medicare Advantage plans use prior authorization — the insurance company decides whether to approve your doctor’s recommendation. Many people don’t discover this until they’re denied. I hear this every single week.

Mistake 02

“I didn’t know I could be declined for a Supplement later if my health changed.”

After your initial enrollment window, insurers can use your health history to deny you a Supplement plan — or charge you significantly more. Your health at 65 is often better than at 70. This is the most costly mistake I see.

Mistake 03

“Nobody explained the difference between Advantage and Supplement — they just enrolled me.”

Most agents only sell one type of plan. An independent advisor shows you both — honestly — and explains the long-term tradeoffs before you sign anything.

Don’t learn this the hard way.

About Cindy

I built Eligry because I almost made the wrong Medicare choice myself.

When I was approaching 65, I was healthy, confident, and ready to pick what seemed like the obvious choice. Then my sister asked me one question — and I realized I had been looking at entirely the wrong things.

After 23 years as a Sales Director at AT&T and 16 years running my own IT consulting firm, I spent over a year studying Medicare inside and out. I got licensed, got certified, and built Eligry around a single commitment:

“To give every person the complete, honest picture I almost didn’t get — before they make a decision that may be very hard to reverse.”

I split my time between Sarasota, Florida and Highland, Indiana — so I know firsthand what it means to manage Medicare across state lines. I don’t work for Humana, UnitedHealthcare, or Aetna. I’m appointed with all of them — and I work for you.

No — completely free. Insurance companies compensate independent advisors when you enroll. Your premium is exactly the same whether you work with me or enroll on your own. There is no reason not to get expert guidance.
No. I’m fully independent — not owned by or affiliated with any carrier. I’m appointed with most major Medicare companies, which means you see every plan available to you, not a curated pitch from one insurer.
It depends on when you enrolled and what you chose. If you’re within your first 12 months on Medicare Advantage, you may have a trial right to switch to a Supplement on guaranteed-issue — no health questions. If you’re past that window, options depend on your state and health. A free review can tell you exactly what’s possible.
That’s one of the most common reasons people call me. Plans change every year — networks, drug formularies, copays, and extra benefits can all shift in January. If you haven’t had a plan review recently, a 30-minute call could save you significantly.
Your Medicare card (if you have one), a list of your current medications and dosages, and the names of your doctors. If you don’t have all of this handy, that’s fine — I can look most things up during the call. Just show up.
